St. George Parish Celebrates Joyous and Unifying Slava Tradition

On May 12, 2024, St. George Serbian Orthodox Parish joyously celebrated its annual church slava, honoring its patron saint, St. George the Great Martyr. This cherished tradition holds profound significance for Orthodox Christians worldwide, symbolizing a deep connection to faith and community.

Very reverend Fr. Aleksandar Novakovic and parishioners from St. Elijah Serbian Orthodox Church in Merryville, Indiana, joined the festivities. The event was a day of profound spiritual enrichment and unity, further highlighted by the beautiful voices of the Bishop Lastavica choir, who enhanced the liturgical service with their angelic singing.

Following the Divine Liturgy, a solemn procession, known as litia, took place around the church. During this procession, the clergy read the four gospel readings, and blessings and prayers were offered for the salvation of all parishioners, creating a moment of collective reverence and reflection.

This year’s slava celebration was graced by the presence of Mr. Momir and Mrs. Sladjana Keric of St. John, Indiana, who served as our kumovi. Their participation added a personal and communal touch to the ceremony, embodying the spirit of togetherness and devotion that defines the slava tradition.

After the liturgical services, a joyous banquet and educational program were held at the Halls of St. George. The event featured children’s junior choir and dancing performances by the Tromedja folklore group.

St. George Serbian Orthodox Church extends its heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you who participated in this year’s Slava celebration. We warmly thank all those who donated, as your contributions and presence were deeply appreciated, making the celebration a memorable and cherished occasion.
