Celebrating the Sunday of Orthodoxy: Faith, Icons, and Fellowship
On Sunday, March 9, 2025, St. George Serbian Orthodox Parish in Schererville, Indiana, will joyfully celebrate the Sunday of Orthodoxy, marking the first Sunday of Great Lent. This special day holds deep spiritual significance as we commemorate the Orthodox Church’s victory over the heresy of iconoclasm and affirm the truth of our faith through the veneration of holy icons.
Children’s Icon Procession – A Beautiful Tradition
A highlight of this celebration will be the Children’s Icon Procession, where our youngest parishioners will engage in a joyful and reverent display of faith. Each child is encouraged to bring a cherished icon from home or carry one provided by the church as they walk in procession around the church at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy. This tradition not only teaches our children the significance of icons in Orthodox worship but also deepens their connection to the faith in a meaningful and visible way.
The Significance of the Sunday of Orthodoxy
The Sunday of Orthodoxy serves as a powerful reminder of the Church’s unwavering commitment to the true faith. It commemorates the restoration of icon veneration in 843 AD and affirms that icons are not just religious decorations but rather windows to heaven, drawing us closer to Christ and the saints. This day also calls each of us to renew our dedication to Orthodoxy, embrace the journey of Great Lent, and stand firm in the faith handed down by the Holy Fathers.
Lenten Fellowship Luncheon at Halls of St. George
Following the Divine Liturgy and the Children’s Icon Procession, everyone is warmly invited to a Lenten Fellowship Luncheon at the Halls of St. George. This special meal, in keeping with the Lenten fast, is graciously sponsored by the Bishop Stefan Lastavica Choir, our parish’s dedicated choir. It will be a wonderful opportunity for fellowship, reflection, and strengthening our bonds as a parish family during this holy season.
Join Us in Celebration!
We invite all parishioners, families, and especially our children to take part in this beautiful tradition. The Divine Liturgy will commence at 10:00 AM, followed by the Children’s Icon Procession and the Lenten Fellowship Luncheon. Parents are encouraged to discuss with their children the significance of icons and the faith we embrace as Orthodox Christians.
Let us unite in unity and love, proclaiming the truth of Orthodoxy with joy!
“This is the faith of the Apostles, this is the faith of the Fathers, this is the faith of the Orthodox, this is the faith that has established the universe!”
O Lord, through the prayers of Your saints, strengthen us in the true faith!
