Commemorating Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia – Protector of Children

December 9th

Today, December 9th, according to the Old Calendar, our Holy Orthodox Church joyfully honors Saint Stylianos of Paphlagonia, a beloved saint known as a protector of children and a comforter to families through the centuries. Our St. George Church in Schererville is blessed to have a beautiful hand-painted icon of St. Stylianos, created by Abbess Porfirija of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Monastery in Kać, near Novi Sad, Serbia. This sacred image allows our parishioners to venerate the saint and seek his heavenly intercession, especially for infants, children, and families.

A Life Devoted Entirely to God and Others

Saint Stylianos was born in Paphlagonia, Asia Minor, sometime between the fourth and sixth centuries. From a young age, he demonstrated deep compassion and love for those in need. When his parents died, he inherited a large fortune—but instead of keeping it, he gave it all to the poor. His main goal was to ease others’ suffering and live a life inspired by the love of Christ.

Seeking a deeper communion with God, Stylianos entered a monastery. His zeal, humility, and devotion surpassed those of the other monks, and for this, he endured jealousy and misunderstanding. Eventually, he retreated to a cave in the wilderness, where he lived as an ascetic through prayer, fasting, and stillness. Yet even in solitude, the grace of God shone through him.

A Healer Through Prayer

The people of Paphlagonia soon realized the holiness of this concealed servant of God. They sought his spiritual advice—and many came with physical and mental infirmities. Through the prayers of St. Stylianos, countless individuals were healed, renewed, and comforted.

But he became primarily known for his deep love for children. Many families brought their little ones to him, and through his prayers, the children were healed of their illnesses. Even after his repose, the faithful continued to trust in his loving protection. When a child fell sick, families would commission an icon of St. Stylianos and hang it above the child’s bed, trusting in his intercession.

His Radiant Repose

When Saint Stylianos fell asleep in the Lord, his face became radiant with divine light, and an angel appeared to receive his soul—testament to the purity and holiness of his life. His memory has been celebrated ever since, especially by parents and those longing for children.

A Protector and Intercessor for Every Family

In Orthodox iconography, St. Stylianos is often shown holding a swaddled infant—symbolizing his gentle care for children. To this day, Christians seek his prayers to protect their kids, bless their families, and comfort those facing infertility.

At St. George Church, we are thankful to have his icon among us—a visual reminder of God’s love and of the saints who intercede for us. May St. Stylianos watch over our children, strengthen parents, and bring peace to all families who call upon him.

Holy Father Stylianos, protector of children, pray to God for us!
