KOLO Sisters
St. George Circle of Serbian Sisters has existed for nearly 90 years. Like all Circles, our Kolo is based on the original idea of the Kolo Srpskih Sestara, which was organized in 1903 in Serbia to help those needing food, clothing, and comfort.
The St. George KSS has remained steadfast as a supporting organization of the church and the Serbian Orthodox people. Throughout the decades, they have prepared and furnished everything from soup kitchens to soup at weddings. Nationally, Kolos were the leading force in helping war refugees settle in the United States of America in the 1950s following World War II, and, sadly, again in the 1990s.
During the war of the 1990s as the former Yugoslavia disintegrated amidst warfare, the Kolo made a historical pilgrimage to Serbia. “The life and work began again,” said +Mara Dobrijevich. “From Kosovo to Knin, the work began as if it never stopped.”
During these challenging times, the sisters banded together with the other Kolos of Northwest Indiana, including St. Elijah, St. Sava, and St. George East Chicago, to provide aid. The humanitarian effort became known as “Four Kolos—Serbian Mothers Against Hunger.” They were recorded as the number one humanitarian organization in the Congressional Book of Records and in the hearts of those who gave and received help.
The work of our Kolo continues today. They work hard and continue to provide aid where needed.
