From Badnjak to Blessings: St. George Church Welcomes the Birth of Christ with Tradition and Love

In the heart of Schererville, Indiana, the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church came alive with the spirit of Christmas as the community joyfully celebrated the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Steeped in tradition, the Serbian Orthodox Church marks this sacred occasion on January 7th or December 25th, following the Old Calendar.

The festive preparations commenced on the Sunday before Nativity when the church community, led by our priest, board members, and eager church school students accompanied by their parents, gathered at the church property by the Old Hall. There, they cut the traditional Christmas tree, known as Badnjak in Serbian, a symbolic act representing welcoming the newly born Christ into their lives. The tree was then brought in front of the church, becoming a radiant testimony to the upcoming celebration.

Anticipation built as the day before Christmas saw several liturgical services. The morning began with the solemn Liturgy, followed by a special Great Compline in the evening, leading to the Nativity Matins service at 11:30 pm. The church was adorned with warmth and devotion as parishioners participated in these services, immersing themselves in the sacred atmosphere.

One of the highlights was the Great Compline service, during which the faithful were anointed with blessed holy oil. The celebration continued at the Old Hall with the blessing of the Badnjak tree, fostering a spirit of fellowship. Our children were an integral part of the festivities, receiving traditional Christmas gift bags filled with fruits, walnuts, and chocolate, symbolizing the sweetness and abundance of the season.

On Christmas day, the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church was filled with profound spiritual grace as the Divine Liturgy unfolded. Parishioners gathered to witness a beautiful and uplifting celebration, with the choir resonating melodies that touched the soul. The involvement of children from the church school, reading festal antiphons and the Epistle, added a youthful and heartwarming element to the Liturgy.

The overall celebration of this year’s Nativity was nothing short of magical. Joy, happiness, peace, and brotherly love permeated the air, creating an unforgettable experience for all present. The St. George Serbian Orthodox Church extends heartfelt gratitude to the parishioners who volunteered their time, talents, and treasures to prepare this beautiful celebration.

As we reflect on this joyous occasion, let us remember the true essence of Christmas ā€“ the birth of Christ, the embodiment of love and hope. In the season’s spirit, we express our warmest wishes to our community and beyond.

Christ is Born! Indeed He is Born!

Hristos se rodi! Vaistinu se rodi!
