St. Sava Celebration at St. George Serbian Orthodox Parish

On Sunday, January 26, 2025, St. George Serbian Orthodox Parish in Schererville, Indiana, joyfully celebrated the feast of St. Sava, the revered patron saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church. This annual celebration serves as a beautiful reminder of St. Sava’s enduring legacy as the founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church, an educator, peacemaker, and guiding light of faith for the Serbian people.

The day began with a solemn Divine Liturgy at 10:00 a.m., where parishioners gathered in prayer to honor St. Sava’s mission of spreading Christ’s love and wisdom. Our church school children and teachers participated actively in the liturgical celebration, highlighting the significance of educating and inspiring future generations in the Orthodox faith.

This year’s kumovi were Gianna Vukas and Neven Vukas, two committed high school seniors and outstanding examples of youth leadership in our parish. They have both been active in church life since childhood, demonstrating their dedication through participation in various church activities.

After the service, the celebration continued at the Halls of St. George, where parishioners gathered for a festive luncheon filled with fellowship and joy. A heartfelt program honored St. Sava’s contributions through poetry, singing, and performances by our talented children’s orchestra, led by Jelena Markovic. The Tromedja folklore group entertained the audience with traditional Serbian dances, celebrating our rich cultural and spiritual heritage.

The program was beautifully hosted by Vaso Michels, our Church School Director, who once again served as the Master of Ceremonies. Additionally, our dedicated Church School teachers and instructors were recognized and honored by the members of the Education Board, in gratitude for their unwavering commitment to educating our youth in the Orthodox faith.

The Significance of the St. Sava Celebration

The Feast of St. Sava is not only a historical remembrance but also a spiritual and cultural milestone for Serbian Orthodox Christians worldwide. St. Sava’s life exemplifies the significance of faith, unity, and service to God and our people. Through this annual celebration, we reaffirm our commitment to preserving and passing on Orthodox values, Serbian traditions, and the love of Christ to future generations.

Heartfelt Thanks

This joyous occasion would not have been possible without many individuals’ hard work and dedication. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our Church School teachers, the Education Board, the children and parents who participated, the kumovi, dancers, volunteers, Halls of St George management and staff and everyone who helped bring this celebration to life. Your efforts and love for our parish community inspire and uplift us all.

May St. Sava’s blessings always guide us, and may we continue to live by his example of faith, wisdom, and love for Christ and His Church!
